KTM plans to release an all-new range of 125 to 350cc entry level street bikes this fall. The news comes from the company's third quarter 2009/10 financial report, which also says the bikes are being built in cooperation with giant Indian manufacturer Bajaj. Austrian design and Indian prices? Sounds good to us.
The report reads:
In addition to the already entered KTM markets, new market opportunities in emerging markets come along with the serial production of entry-level street motorcycles (125cc to 350cc), which will be launched in late fall 2010 in cooperation with Bajaj Auto Ltd. The fist step will be Brazil, where the market offensive is already in the preparation stage.
Bajaj Auto Ltd. owns over 30 percent of KTM and has stated that it would like to acquire a majority share in the Austrian motorcycle maker. The reason for that is Bajaj would like to apply its low-cost production to alternative markets, namely Europe and South America as well as bring the KTM brand to its native Southeast Asia in a cheaper form. KTM has the credibility and a strong, recognized brand, Bajaj has access to cheap labor and large-scale production efficiencies.
The new bikes are expected to be four-strokes and will be tailored to the economically-minded South American market, so don't expect to see as high a specification as that demonstrated on the KTM 125 Stunt and Race concepts pictured above. Having said that, we'll be very disappointed if this project results in nothing more than the typical disposable second-world budget bikes, just painted orange.
Discussing the brand-new 125cc four-stroke engine in these two concepts at EICMA last year, KTM stated:
A minimal weight, best handling and best rideability are the traditional development goals. Not to be forgotten is the powerful engine, 100% developed in Mattighofen, which with 125 ccm displacement ensures plenty of enjoyment. A four valve cylinder head, two overhead camshafts, water cooling and fuel injection means that the basis 11 KW (15 hp) strong 125 cc engine carries all the most modern construction characteristics. As well as an exemplary motor culture, this typical new KTM development promises tingling performance output but at the same time guarantees highly modern levels of fuel consumption and emission characteristics.
Expect to see the finished product at EICMA in November.
